About Benno

Benno Bikes was founded in 2015 by Benno Baenziger, who had co-founded the Electra Bicycle Company in San Diego in 1993 before leaving in 2010. Born and raised in Berlin and trained as a designer, Baenziger built Benno around a single idea: a bike that carries cargo and passengers but rides like a nimble standard bike. The company is based in Del Mar, California.

Benno calls the category Etility, a blend of agility and utility. Every current model runs a Bosch mid-drive motor paired with a Shimano or Enviolo drivetrain, and the frames use smaller wheels and a long, low rear deck to keep heavy loads stable and the center of gravity down. The flagship Boost carries more than three times the load of a typical bike and accepts a dual-battery setup for up to 160 miles of range.

The lineup spans wheel sizes from 20 to 27.5 inches, all built to replace car trips with kids, groceries, and gear on board. A modular accessory system of running boards, footpegs, front trays, and child seats lets one frame reconfigure between commuter, hauler, and family bike. Benno sells through specialty dealers across the US and Europe.

Benno builds one thing, the Bosch-powered sport cargo e-bike, and varies it by wheel size and load capacity. Every model shares the long rear deck, integrated lighting, and the modular accessory mounts that let it shift between commuter, hauler, and family duty.

The Boost is the flagship 24-inch hauler, rated for over three times a normal bike’s load with a dual-battery option for 160 miles. The RemiDemi and RemiDemi XL drop to 20-inch wheels for a lower, more maneuverable ride, the XL stretching the rear deck to carry two kids. The eScout on 27.5-inch wheels and the eJoy on 26-inch wheels lean commuter and utility, and the 46er pairs 27.5-inch wheels with a compact cargo frame. A Benno that replaces a second car carries replacement value most homeowner’s policies cap below, which is where stand-alone cargo bike insurance from Velosurance fills the gap.
