Why you need Velosurance for your cargo bike

Cargo bikes are built for urban lifestyles, effectively providing a more efficient, economical and agile car replacement for many owners. Since cargo bikes are ridden predominantly on public roads and shared paths, accidents, thefts, and damages are all too common and often result in pricey repairs or outright replacement of the bike. Considering the important role a cargo bike plays in your family or business, it's crucial to protect the investment with insurance. With bicycle insurance, you can rest assured that you're covered in the event of unexpected circumstances.
Cargo bike crash damage coverage
Your cargo bike is covered if it’s damaged in a crash. If it’s damaged in an accident, it’s covered.

Riding a cargo bike may not be particularly difficult, but it does require some adjustment. Cargo bikes are not as nimble as regular bicycles, they have significantly wider turning radii and longer braking distances. These characteristics become more pronounced when the bike is loaded with cargo. While minor crashes can be viewed as learning opportunities, more serious accidents can result in significant damage. In such instances, having insurance would be beneficial. Bicycle insurance can provide peace of mind and cover the cost of repairs or replacement for a damaged bike. Our basic policy covers up to $500 for riding apparel, gloves, shoes, sunglasses, and helmets, as well as spare parts up to $500 per loss, with a policy term limit of $1,000.
Cargo bike theft coverage
If your cargo bike is stolen from your home, car, workplace or any other secure location, it’s covered.

Similar to any other valuable possession, cargo bikes are susceptible to theft. There are several methods of stealing cargo bikes, including theft from homes or garages, or stealing them from public parking areas or garages. Thieves find cargo bikes attractive due to their high value, unique appearance, rarity, or because they are comparatively easy to sell. To prevent theft, it is crucial to secure your bike with a sturdy lock, store it in a secure location, and take precautions while transporting it. However, even with the best precautions, bikes can still be stolen. In such instances, having insurance for your bike can provide financial protection and minimize downtime by helping to cover the cost of replacement.
Liability coverage
We will protect you from personal liability (injury or property damage) you cause while riding your cargo bike.

There are several advantages to cycling in the city, which involves riding on city roads, sidewalks, and shared paths. Once you get familiar with riding in the city, you’ll be able to reach your destination faster than by car almost every time, easy parking is just an added bonus. However, biking in the city also comes with a relatively high risk of injury, which riders must acknowledge before taking to the streets. Even minor injuries become more likely with frequent riding, and there is always the possibility of a severe injury that requires extensive medical attention. It is not advisable to ride without adequate health coverage, as even a broken collarbone or torn ligament can result in substantial medical bills. To mitigate these risks, Velosurance offers medical gap insurance as an option, which covers the remaining medical expenses not covered by primary health insurance, including deductibles and copays.

Our policy offers a wide range of optional coverages to eliminate or minimize risks of cycling lifestyle.

The cyclist insurance policy will pay to replace the bike when the bike is accidentally damaged beyond repair. If the damage can be repaired, the policy will pay all the costs associated with the repair. Cosmetic damage is excluded.
Liability Coverage
We will protect you from personal liability (injury, sickness, death, or damage to property) you cause while riding your bike.
E-cargo Coverage
We cover all electrically assisted Class 1, 2 and 3 bikes with a maximum assisted speed of 28 mph All coverages available for conventional bikes also apply to e-bikes.
E-cargo bike coverage
Our normal coverages also extend to e-bikes, including electric cargo bikes.

There's no denying that electric bikes are now a permanent fixture in the biking world, despite being a controversial topic in the past. Among all the bikes that benefit from electrification, cargo bikes are particularly noteworthy. With the assistance of an electric motor, cargo bikes transform into the ultimate city machines, enabling riders to travel farther and faster and carry the heaviest of loads up steep hills. As a result, they can now be considered a feasible alternative to a family car or SUV. Velosurance provides insurance policies that cover theft and accidental damage for Class 1, 2, and 3 electric cargo bikes, with additional options such as liability, medical payments, and uninsured motorist coverage.
Coverages and Features
Velosurance offers must-have protection such as accidental damage, theft, or loss in transit. Each policy can be customized by adding additional coverages such as liability protection, uninsured motorist, and medical payments. Select any coverage to see the details.
Bicycles are very easy to steal and equally difficult to recover, and even a hefty U-lock doesn’t guarantee your bike is still there when you return. Velosurance provides peace of mind if it is stolen or damaged in the process.
Our policy will pay to replace your ride if it is accidentally damaged and beyond repair, including damage that occurs while being carried on or in your vehicle. If it can be repaired, we will pay all the costs associated with the bike's repair, including tax, labor, and shipping, minus the deductible. Cosmetic damage that does not affect safety is excluded.
Our policy optional coverage purchase will protect and defend you from your personal liability (injury, sickness, death, or damage to property, including fire damage) that you are found legally liable for. Coverage limits offered: $25,000, $50,000, $100,000, $300,000 or $500,000 per occurrence.
E-bike liability insurance →If you’re hurt and require medical attention, our optional medical gap will take care of your medical bills, up to the selected limit. The payments are paid directly to you to supplement the deductible of your personal health insurance policy.
Medical gap insurance →Depreciation is a hidden deductible that increases every year and is applied if the bicycle is stolen or totaled. No one is ever happy with an Actual Cash Value insurance settlement: the bike is first devalued, and then a deductible is applied, resulting in a reimbursement that is far less than the cost of a replacement. We reimburse without depreciation, for the cost of a replacement that is of like, kind, and quality similar to your totaled bike.
One of the scariest things that can happen to a cyclist is getting hit by a car. This coverage will pay for medical expenses, physical therapy, mental health services, lost wages, and other expenses that arise from a bicycle-car accident.
Uninsured motorist insurance →We cover all electrically assisted Class 1, 2, and 3 bikes with a maximum assisted speed of 28 mph. All protections available for conventional bicycles also apply to electric ones.
E-bike insurance →Bikes often get damaged in transit by personal vehicles, airlines, or courier services. Filing a claim with the airlines and courier services is a notoriously difficult process with a questionable outcome. We cover the insured bicycle for loss or damage while it's on its way to or from your destination by air or road. Even if it falls off a vehicle rack or is hit in a rear-end accident, it is covered, no arguments.
Bicycle travel coverage →If you go down in a crash, we cover your ride as well as your apparel, such as helmet, shoes, glasses, or riding kit that are torn up, and pay up to $500 per accident and $1,000 per term. Spare parts that are not installed, such as a spare wheelset, are also covered up to $500 per loss and $1,000 per year.
Our policy does not piggypack on any coverage you may already have, such as homeowners policies. Filing a claim won’t impact your rates with other carriers. With home insurance premiums rising each year in the U.S., it’s wise to reserve that policy for major incidents, because no matter how valuable your bike is, it’s still a lot cheaper than a kitchen fire or a flooded basement.
We cover the insured bike at all times, anywhere in the USA and Canada, and can be extended worldwide on request. There are no exclusions on the time of day or limitations on how long it can be stored away from home. 24/7/365 means every minute of every day, no matter where or when.
In the heat of a race, the focus on speed often outweighs concerns for safety, leaving little margin for error. If you go down in a crash, this optional coverage takes care of repairs or replacement. If you use your bike in a competitive environment, this is a no-brainer because it offers protection in the highest-risk category.
Bicycle racing insurance →If your travels take you beyond the USA and Canada, for a small additional premium, this option extends the physical loss and damage protection, including loss or damage caused by an airline, to any country in the world.
International coverage →You can lend it to anyone you choose, and it will be covered. The bike and the person riding it are covered as if it were you riding it‚ this includes theft and crash damage as well as any purchased optional coverages.
We do not dictate what type or brand of lock must be used to protect your ride from theft – you are welcome to use any lock that you trust. The best security is provided by metal locks combined with a high-quality chain. Securing your ride to a solid and immovable object, such as a bike rack, with a high-quality lock will send the thief onto the one secured with a more vulnerable lock.

Not all types of insurance are created equal. Velosurance levels the playing field by offering stand-alone bicycle coverage, where claims won’t affect your homeowner's or renter’s policy premiums.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What does cargo bike insurance cover?
- The policy is all-risk, meaning anything not specifically excluded is covered: crash and accidental damage anywhere you ride; theft from your home, car, or workplace, subject to the policy's locking conditions; and damage or loss in transit by car, airline, or courier. Your cargo bike, electric or pedal-powered, is insured at stated value with no depreciation. Riding apparel, including gloves, shoes, sunglasses, and helmets, is covered up to $500, and spare parts up to $500 per loss with a $1,000 policy term limit. Optional coverages add personal liability, medical gap, uninsured motorist, and worldwide protection, all elected before an accident.
- How much does cargo bike insurance cost?
- A Velosurance policy starts at $100 per year, roughly $9 a month, and the insured value of your bike drives the premium more than any other factor, which matters on a high-value cargo bike. Frame material, your location, how you ride, the deductible you choose, and the coverages you select set the exact number. Insuring two bikes on one policy takes 10% off the bicycle coverage premium, and three or more takes 15%.
- Is my cargo bike covered against theft?
- Yes. Theft is covered whether the bike is taken from your home, your car, or your workplace, subject to the policy's locking conditions, and damage from an attempted theft is covered too. Cargo bikes draw thieves for their value alone, so lock yours to an immovable object with an appropriate security device; the policy sets no brand or price requirement, so your usual lock works. Every theft claim requires a police report, so file one the same day.
- What if I crash with a full load?
- The crash is covered, loaded or not. A loaded cargo bike turns wider and stops longer, and the policy covers crash and accidental damage however it happens: repair costs if the bike can be fixed, replacement if it is damaged beyond repair. The load itself is not covered, whether that is groceries, gear, or anything else you were hauling. Cosmetic damage that does not affect function is also excluded.
- Do I need liability coverage on a cargo bike?
- It is the optional coverage that deserves the closest look. Liability protects you when you injure someone or damage property while riding, and includes the cost of defending a covered lawsuit. A cargo bike replacing a family car sees car-level daily use around pedestrians and traffic, so the exposure is real even for careful riders. Like every elected coverage, it must be in place before the accident.
- Are Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 electric cargo bikes covered?
- Yes, all three classes are covered: Class 1 e-bikes are pedal-assist only with a maximum assisted speed of 20 mph, Class 2 are throttle-assisted up to 20 mph, and Class 3 reach assisted speeds up to 28 mph. An electric cargo bike is covered for theft and accidental damage just like a conventional bike, with liability, medical payments, and uninsured motorist coverage available as options.
- What happens if I get injured riding my cargo bike?
- Optional medical gap insurance covers the medical expenses your primary health insurance leaves behind, including deductibles and copays. City riding carries a relatively high risk of injury, and even a broken collarbone or torn ligament can result in substantial medical bills. The coverage must be elected before the accident, so add it when you buy the policy.
- Is my cargo bike covered if someone else rides it?
- Yes. Permissive use is built into the policy: you can lend the insured cargo bike to another rider and coverage still applies. The permission has to come from you, the policyholder. One thing to watch: theft by someone you entrusted the bike to is not covered.
- What if I am transporting a child and the child is injured in a crash?
- The policy insures the rider, so medical gap coverage applies to your injuries as the operator, not to a passenger's. Your child's medical bills would go through their own health insurance, the same as any other childhood injury.
