Why you need Velosurance for your gravel bike

Why you need Velosurance for your gravel bike

Gravel bikes are adventure machines designed for exploring both paved and off-road terrain, and both come with their unique set of risks. Accidents, thefts, and damages are common occurrences that can leave you without a functioning bike, and maybe even a hefty bill. With bicycle insurance coverage, you can have peace of mind knowing that you are protected in case of unforeseen circumstances. Gravel biking is a thrilling experience, but it's essential to protect your investment with insurance, so you can enjoy your adventure without worrying about the costs of repairs or replacements.

Gravel bike crash damage coverage

On a road or trail, a group ride or a race, if it’s damaged in an accident, it’s covered.

crash damage coverage

Gravel biking is physically demanding and takes part on unprepared surfaces where accidents tend to happen. While most crashes are minor and should be seen as learning experiences, sometimes accidents can lead to significant damage. Those are the moments you wished you had insurance. Bicycle insurance can provide peace of mind and cover the cost of repairs or replacement for a damaged bike, especially since gravel bikes rarely fare well in slide-out and side-impact situations. Our basic policy covers up to $500 for riding apparel, gloves, shoes, sunglasses, and the helmet, as well as spare wheelsets or parts up to $500 per loss, with a $1,000 limit for the policy term.

Gravel bike theft coverage

If your bike is stolen from your home, car, workplace or any other secure location, it’s covered.

theft coverage

Gravel bikes, like any other valuable property, can be stolen. There are a few ways that a gravel bike can be stolen, including theft from home or garage or from a vehicle parked in a public place. Thieves target gravel bikes due to their high value, exceptional popularity, or because they are easy to sell. To prevent theft, it is essential to secure your bike with a sturdy lock, store it in a secure location, and take precautions while transporting it. Unfortunately, even well-secured bikes get stolen occasionally. Having insurance for your bike can provide financial protection and minimize downtime by helping cover the cost of replacement.

Medical coverage

This optional coverage will pay the leftover bills once your primary health insurance has paid its share.

medical coverage

Riding on unpaved roads at high speeds is as exhilarating as it is dangerous. Gravel biking carries a relatively high risk of injury, which riders must accept before hopping in the saddle. Even minor injuries become more likely with frequent riding, with the possibility of a serious injury that requires extensive medical treatment. Riding without proper health coverage is not recommended, as even a broken collarbone or torn ligament could result in a significant medical bill. Velosurance offers medical gap insurance for cyclists as an option to cover the leftover medical expenses not covered by primary health insurance, including deductibles and copays.

I had a catastrophic failure of my rear wheel of my bicycle, which caused me to crash. Beside my wheel being destroyed, my bike frame sustained significant damage and had to be replaced. The claim was settled in less than one week based on the estimate from the bike shop.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does gravel bike insurance cover?
The core policy is all-risk, meaning anything not specifically excluded is covered: crash and accidental damage on pavement or gravel, theft subject to the policy's locking conditions, and loss or damage in transit by car, airline, or courier. Optional coverages add liability, medical gap, uninsured motorist, racing, and worldwide protection. Physical damage claims are subject to the deductible.
How much does gravel bike insurance cost?
Policies start at $100 per year, about $9 a month, and the insured value of the bike sets most of the premium. Your location, deductible, and elected coverages fine-tune the number. Insuring two bikes on one policy saves 10%, three or more saves 15%, and active USA Cycling members take another 10% off.
Does the policy cover a slide-out on loose gravel?
Yes. Crash and accidental damage coverage applies no matter how the crash happens, including slide-outs and side impacts, the situations gravel bikes fare worst in. The policy pays to repair the bike or, if it is beyond repair, pays the value you insured it for, minus the deductible. Cosmetic damage that does not affect function is excluded.
Are my helmet, kit, and spare wheelset covered?
Yes. Riding apparel, gloves, shoes, sunglasses, and your helmet are covered up to $500 when damaged in a crash, with a $1,000 policy term limit. Spare parts are covered up to $500 per loss with the same $1,000 policy term limit, which includes the second wheelset many gravel riders keep for road duty.
Is my bike covered against theft at a trailhead or cafe stop?
Yes, theft is covered at home and away. At home, the claim requires signs of forcible entry; away from home, the bike must be locked to an immovable object with an appropriate security device. Velosurance doesn't stipulate which lock you use: any lock designed for securing bikes is acceptable, as long as it's appropriate for the job. Every theft claim requires a police report, so file one the same day.
Are Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 electric gravel bikes covered?
Yes, all three classes are covered like conventional gravel bikes. Theft and accidental damage fall under the core policy, with optional liability, medical gap, and uninsured motorist coverage available. High-power electric dirt bikes are not covered.
Does the policy cover gravel racing?
Yes, when racing coverage is elected on the bike. This optional coverage insures crash damage in organized competition, from a local grinder to a multi-day stage race, and it must be in place before the accident. Group rides and training days fall under the core policy, so add racing coverage before the season starts.
Which optional coverages make sense for a gravel rider?
Medical gap and liability fit the way gravel is ridden: long days on remote roads where an injury is the main risk, and group rides where you can injure someone or damage their property. Medical gap reimburses your out-of-pocket medical costs (deductible, copays, coinsurance) after your health plan pays its share. Liability pays for your defense and covered settlements if you're found at fault for an accident and sued. For either coverage to apply, it must be elected before the accident.
