About Argon 18
Argon 18 was founded in 1989 in Montreal by Gervais Rioux, a Canadian road racer with three national titles and a start at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. The name comes from argon, element 18 on the periodic table, the inert gas used in precision frame welding. Rioux built the company around race-bred geometry for the North American market.
The brand began in-house carbon production in 2001 and launched the Gallium, its first monocoque carbon frame, in 2005. Argon 18’s engineering signature is the 3D System headtube, which lets riders tune front-end height without stacking spacers. Its frames have carried WorldTour and national teams, and its track program has supplied pursuit and sprint bikes to Olympic programs.
Today Argon 18 sells in more than 70 countries from its Montreal headquarters, spanning aero and lightweight road bikes, endurance all-road platforms, gravel race bikes, integrated triathlon superbikes, track frames, and a Subito electric line. The focus stays on performance carbon for racers and fast riders.
Most popular Argon 18 models
Argon 18’s catalog is built around performance carbon across road, gravel, triathlon, and track. On the road, the Nitrogen Pro is the aero flagship, with Argon 18 claiming 24 watts saved over the Sum Pro at 45 km/h, while the Sum and Sum Pro carry the lightweight all-rounder role that merged the old Gallium climber and Nitrogen aero platforms. The Equation anchors the endurance-road entry tier, and the Krypton Pro stretches into all-road riding with wider tire clearance.
Off pavement, the redesigned Dark Matter and the race-focused Anti Matter cover everything from gravel racing to bikepacking, both built around SRAM XPLR drivetrains. The triathlon range is the brand’s calling card: the E-119 Tri+ is a fully integrated superbike, and the E-117 brings the same aero geometry to a lower price. The Electron is the complete alloy track bike for the velodrome, and the Subito eRoad and eGravel add discreet electric assist. A high-value tri rig like the E-119 Tri+ carries the kind of replacement cost a homeowner’s policy frequently caps below, where stand-alone triathlon bike insurance from Velosurance fills the gap.
