About Electric Bike Company

Electric Bike Company was founded in 2014 in Newport Beach, California, by Sean Lupton-Smith, a South African-born entrepreneur who spent two years researching frames, parts sourcing, and rider psychology before building his first electric beach cruiser in a 3,000-square-foot combined showroom and factory on Newport Boulevard.

The pitch was unlike anything else in the US e-bike market: every bike was built to order in California, painted in-house in any combination the customer chose, and assembled from components sourced from 17 countries. Buyers picked the frame color, the rim color, the fenders, the basket, even custom branding. The company backed the bikes with a 10-year warranty on motor and frame and a 5-year warranty on the battery, and its Model X was named the top-rated e-cruiser in the USA by Electric Bike Review three years running, from 2018 through 2020.

The run ended in October 2025, when the company filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation, listing $6.1 million in liabilities after US tariffs on imported components squeezed its made-in-America assembly model. Thousands of its hand-painted cruisers are still on the road. With factory warranty support gone, a replacement-cost insurance policy is the only backstop an owner has left.

Most popular Electric Bike Company models

Every Electric Bike Company model is a variation on one theme: a hand-built, custom-painted electric beach cruiser from the Newport Beach factory. The final lineup centered on four platforms. The Model C is the flagship classic cruiser, sold with cruiser or BMX handlebars and in a long, low chopper variant. The Model S is a Class 3 beach cruiser built around a 500W motor. The Model R is a step-thru cruiser on plus-size tires, and the Model J is the moto-inspired compact that brought the brand’s premium parts down to an entry price.

Earlier models remain common on boardwalks and beach paths: the award-winning Model X, the value-focused Model E, the compact step-thru Model Y, the folding Model F, and the high-capacity Model A. Most of these are daily neighborhood and errand bikes as much as weekend cruisers, and the step-thru frames make them natural city runabouts, the kind of riding where commuter bike insurance earns its premium. With the factory closed, a stolen or wrecked Electric Bike Company cruiser cannot be reordered, which makes replacement-cost coverage the difference between a payout and a parts hunt.
