Velosurance for electric bikes

Velosurance for electric bikes

One of the unfortunate possibilities is being involved in accidents that result in damage to your e-bike or result in injuries and medical expenses. The Velosurance cyclist policy insures against accidental damage to the bike, and the optional liability coverage defends the rider against injury or damage claims. Home and renters insurance policies aren’t designed to specifically provide bike coverage and many of them exclude coverage altogether if the bike has an electric motor. One way to plan for the unexpected during your ride is to solicit help from someone who has experience with unexpected cycling situations.

Avid cyclists, the founders of Velosurance recognized the need for insurance protection that is specific to a rider’s needs, whether a bicycle is electric-assist or pedal-power. Our policies are highly customizable and intended to protect riders from the risks associated with their lifestyle. Coverage is available in the US to insure all Class 1, 2, and 3 e-bikes capable of a maximum top speed of 28 MPH. The policy insures the cyclist anywhere in the US, Canada, or anywhere in the world with optional Worldwide Coverage.

Insured at full value

Your e-bike is worth to us what it’s worth to you. We do not depreciate your e-bike so in case of a total loss you can get yourself a bike of similar value

insured at full value

Unlike traditional insurance policies that often factor in depreciation, we recognize the value of bicycles, including e-bikes, and ensure that policyholders are made whole in case of a claim. This means that even if the e-bike has depreciated in value since its purchase, Velosurance will reimburse the policyholder based on the bike's purchase price.

Because it's a standalone policy, claims do not impact the rates of homeowners or renters insurance policies you may already have. This means that filing a claim with Velosurance for a bike-related incident will not result in increased premiums or policy adjustments for other types of insurance coverage.

E-bike bike crash damage coverage

On a road or trail, a group ride or a race, if it’s damaged in an accident, it’s covered.

crash damage coverage

Accidents are one of the only downsides of biking. While it’s most common for novice and intermediate riders to be involved in a crash, even the most experienced of riders are bound to suffer an occasional wipeout. A policy from Velosurance provides comprehensive coverage for e-bikes (including e-mtb), providing reliable coverage for crashes and accidental damage.

Whether your e-bike sustains damage due to a fall, collision, or unforeseen circumstances, Velosurance takes care of the expenses incurred in restoring your bike to its pre-damage condition. In fact, you don't have to be riding the bike for the damage to occur: the bike can be damaged when being transported by a car or in possession of an airline or a common carrier, like FedEx or UPS.

E-bike theft coverage

If your e-bike is stolen from your home, car, workplace or any other secure location, it’s covered.

theft coverage

We go above and beyond to offer comprehensive coverage for e-bikes against theft, ensuring peace of mind for owners whether they are at home or away.

When it comes to theft at home, we cover e-bikes that are securely stored within the premises. Should a theft occur, policyholders can confidently file a claim and provide the necessary documentation, such as a police report, to support their case.

Whether an e-bike is stolen from a public location, while locked up outside, or even taken from a locked vehicle, it is covered. To mitigate the risk of theft, policyholders are encouraged to employ precautionary measures like using high-quality locks and following best practices for securing their e-bikes.

Up to $500,000 in liability coverage

Offering protection and confidence to riders in an increasingly complex environment.

theft coverage

E-bikes have changed how we have fun and commute. In doing so, they also increased our exposure to liability risks. Accidents involving pedestrians and motor vehicles have become a significant concern. Collisions often result in injuries, property damage, and, inevitably, legal disputes. Unfortunately, you don’t have to be at fault to be sued, and if you are, you have to defend yourself. If you’re named in a lawsuit, this coverage will act as your legal defense fund and pay for injuries or damage up to the policy limit.

Even though lithium-ion batteries that power e-bikes are considered safe, like any technology, they carry some risks. In some environments the batteries can be susceptible to thermal runaway resulting in spontaneous combustion that is extremely difficult to extinguish Several residential fires have put property managers on alert and now many require high-limit liability insurance from e-bike owners. Cyclist liability coverage includes protection for property damaged in battery-related incidents.

We cover Class 1, 2, and 3 e-bikes

Most states in the USA follow the Federal government's definition for what defines an electric powered bicycle, most commonly termed as e-bikes, and e-bikes are classified with a simple, straightforward approach known as the “3-Class” system. A Velosurance e-bike policy is available to cover Class 1, 2, and 3 e-bikes with an all risk, stated value policy that does not depreciate the bike value no matter when the bike was purchased. Medical Gap Insurance, Personal Liability, and Uninsured Motorist limits are available as optional coverage.

Class 1

E-bikes (and E-MTBs) that are pedal-assist only, with no throttle, and have a maximum assisted speed of 20 mph

Class 2

E-bikes that have a maximum speed of 20 mph as well, but are throttle-assisted.

Class 3

E-bikes that are pedal-assist, may have throttle (in many states), and a maximum assisted speed of 28 mph.

We cover all popular e-bikes

The cost to insure an electric bike is no different than insuring a pedal-power bike and the Velosurance cyclist policy offers the same coverage to both bike types. If you expect to be spending a bit of time in the saddle and want to ride with peace of mind of knowing you’re covered for a myriad of situations, consider insurance for your electric bicycle.

Velosurance is FANTASTIC! My son's ebike was stolen from a grocery store parking lot - the thief left the cut cable. We made an immediate police report, contacted Velosurance, and submitted the necessary purchase receipts and police contact, and within less than a week the claim was approved and payment received. Excellent claim's representative too!

I interacted with one of Velosurance's customer service team members and had a fantastic experience! I spoke with Dave and he was very helpful and considerate of my time. In the age of AI and robot phone prompts, it was so refreshing to speak with a real person who was professional, polite, and down to earth. Thanks Velosurance!

Frequently Asked Questions

Which e-bike classes does Velosurance insure?
All three classes. Class 1 e-bikes are pedal-assist only, with no throttle, and a maximum assisted speed of 20 mph; Class 2 e-bikes are throttle-assisted with the same 20 mph maximum; and Class 3 e-bikes are pedal-assist, may have a throttle in many states, and reach assisted speeds up to 28 mph. Any e-bike with a maximum assisted speed of 28 mph or less qualifies, including e-MTBs, and all three classes get the same all-risk, stated-value policy.
How much does e-bike insurance cost?
A Velosurance e-bike policy starts at $100 per year, and most riders pay between $100 and $300 a year, roughly $9 to $25 a month. The insured value drives the premium more than any other factor: an e-bike valued at $1,000 to $2,000 typically runs $100 to $150 a year, while a model above $4,000 runs $250 to $400. Insuring an e-bike costs no more than insuring a pedal-power bike of the same value, and multi-bike and cycling association discounts lower the premium further.
What does an e-bike insurance policy cover?
The core policy is all-risk: theft from your home, car, workplace, or any other secure location; crash and accidental damage on a road or trail, in a group ride, or in a race; and damage or loss while your e-bike is transported by car or in the possession of an airline or a common carrier like FedEx or UPS. Riding gear and apparel are covered up to policy limits. Optional coverages include personal liability up to $500,000, medical gap, uninsured motorist, and worldwide coverage.
How is my e-bike valued after a total loss?
Your e-bike is insured at its full stated value, and that value never depreciates. In a total loss you are reimbursed based on the bike's purchase price, even if the bike has lost market value since you bought it, so you can replace it with a bike of similar value. Because it is a standalone policy, a claim will not raise the rates of any other insurance you carry.
How much liability coverage can I add?
Liability limits from $25,000 up to $500,000 are available as optional coverage. If you are named in a lawsuit, the coverage acts as your legal defense fund and pays for injuries or damage up to the policy limit, and you do not have to be at fault to be sued. It also covers property damaged in battery-related incidents, which matters now that many property managers require high-limit liability insurance from e-bike owners.
Does the liability coverage apply if my e-bike starts a fire?
Yes. Cyclist liability coverage includes protection for property damaged in battery-related incidents, so if a lithium-ion battery goes into thermal runaway and the resulting fire damages someone else's property, the coverage responds up to your policy limit and pays for your legal defense if you are sued. This is the exact scenario behind the growing number of property managers who require high-limit liability insurance from e-bike owners, and limits up to $500,000 are available to meet those requirements.
Is my e-bike covered when I travel?
Yes. The policy insures you anywhere in the US and Canada, and optional worldwide coverage extends protection to rides anywhere in the world. Your e-bike is also covered in transit, whether it is on your car rack, checked with an airline, or shipped with a courier, so getting to the ride is insured along with the ride itself.
Can I insure my kid's or teenager's e-bike?
Yes. Any e-bike listed on your policy is insured no matter who its primary rider is, and since a minor cannot hold their own insurance policy, a parent's policy is the way to cover a kid's or teen's e-bike until age 18. Coverage follows the bike, so your child is covered automatically whenever they ride it with your permission, at no extra premium, and elected liability coverage protects both your teen's and your own legal liability. One thing to watch: make sure your rider meets your state's rules, since most states set a minimum age of 16 for the fastest e-bikes and some require helmets for riders under 18.
