We will protect you from personal liability (injury, sickness, death, or damage to property) you cause while riding your tricycle.

Why you need Velosurance for your tricycle

Why you need Velosurance for your tricycle

Tricycles are perfectly fit to urban lifestyles by offering a practical, cost-effective, and flexible mobility alternative. As trikes are primarily used on public roads, sidewalks and shared paths, unfortunate incidents such as accidents, thefts, and damages are quite prevalent and can lead to substantial repair or replacement costs. Considering that for some a trike is the primary mode of transportation, it's imperative to safeguard the investment with insurance coverage. Bicycle insurance provides coverage for trikes and offers a peace of mind by ensuring that you are protected against unforeseen events.

Tricycle crash damage coverage

Your tricycle is covered if it’s damaged in a crash. If it’s damaged in any accident, it’s covered.

crash damage coverage

Although riding a trike is not overly difficult due to its inherent stability and naturally lower speed, it does require some adjustments. Tricycles are less maneuverable than regular bicycles and have wider turning radii and longer braking distances. These differences become more pronounced when the trike is loaded with cargo. While minor accidents can be valuable learning experiences, more severe crashes can result in significant damage. In such situations, having insurance can be advantageous. Bicycle insurance provides a sense of security and can cover the cost of repairs or replacement for a tricycle. Our basic policy covers up to $500 for riding gear, such as helmets, gloves, shoes, sunglasses, and apparel, as well as spare parts up to $500 per loss, with a policy term limit of $1,000.

Tricycle theft coverage

If your tricycle is stolen from your home, car, workplace or any other secure location, it’s covered.

theft coverage

Similar to any other valuable possession, tricycles are susceptible to theft. There are several methods of stealing cargo bikes, including theft from homes or garages, or stealing them from public parking areas or garages. Thieves find trikes attractive due to their high value, exceptional popularity, relative rarity, or because they are comparatively easy to sell. To prevent theft, it is crucial to secure your bike with a sturdy lock, store it in a secure location, and take precautions while transporting it. However, even with the best precautions, trikes can still be stolen. In such instances, having insurance for your bike can provide financial protection and minimize downtime by helping to cover the cost of replacement.

America's best tricycle insurance

Our policy offers a wide range of optional coverages to eliminate or minimize risks of cycling lifestyle.

Any Accidental Damage

The cyclist insurance policy will pay to replace the bike when the bike is accidentally damaged beyond repair. If the damage can be repaired, the policy will pay all the costs associated with the repair. Cosmetic damage is excluded.

Liability Coverage

We will protect you from personal liability (injury, sickness, death, or damage to property) you cause while riding your bike. Coverage limits offered: $25,000, $50,000 or $100,000 per occurrence.

E-trike Coverage

We cover all electrically assisted Class 1, 2 and 3 bikes with a maximum assisted speed of 28 mph All coverages available for conventional bikes also apply to e-bikes.

Electric tricycle coverage

Electric tricycles are an excellent substitute for a vehicle in urban environments. With extended range, hill climbing ability, higher speeds and ability to carry substantial cargo, they can be operated without a driver’s license and by people with special needs.

e trike coverage

Electric bikes have undoubtedly become a permanent fixture in the biking world, despite previously being a controversial topic. While electrification makes any bike more versatile and fun, trikes are particularly noteworthy because of their niche use-case. With the help of an electric motor, trikes can travel farther and faster while carrying heavy loads up steep hills. Due to their relative ease of operation and accessibility, they have become a viable alternative to a family car or SUV, especially for the elderly and those with limited mobility and special needs. Our policy covers electric bikes and trikes just like normal bikes. Additional optional coverages such as liability, medical payments, and uninsured motorist coverage are also available.

Coverages and Features

Velosurance offers must-have protection such as accidental damage, theft, or loss in transit. Each policy can be customized by adding additional coverages such as liability protection, uninsured motorist, and medical payments. Select any coverage to see the details.

Velosurance is FANTASTIC! My son's ebike was stolen from a grocery store parking lot - the thief left the cut cable. We made an immediate police report, contacted Velosurance, and submitted the necessary purchase receipts and police contact, and within less than a week the claim was approved and payment received. Excellent claim's representative too!

I interacted with one of Velosurance's customer service team members and had a fantastic experience! I spoke with Dave and he was very helpful and considerate of my time. In the age of AI and robot phone prompts, it was so refreshing to speak with a real person who was professional, polite, and down to earth. Thanks Velosurance!

Frequently Asked Questions

What does tricycle insurance cover?
The policy covers your tricycle against crash and accidental damage anywhere you ride: roads, trails, group rides, and races. Theft is covered subject to the policy's locking conditions, as is loss or damage in transit, riding gear such as helmets, gloves, shoes, and sunglasses up to $500, and spare parts up to $500 per loss with a $1,000 policy term limit. The trike itself is insured at stated value with no depreciation. Optional coverages add liability, medical gap, uninsured motorist, racing, and worldwide protection, each elected before an accident. Wear and tear and cosmetic damage that does not affect function are excluded.
Are electric trikes covered?
Yes. Class 1, 2, and 3 electric trikes, up to a maximum assisted speed of 28 mph, are covered just like conventional trikes, and every coverage available for a regular trike applies to an e-trike. For older riders and people with limited mobility, that makes an e-trike a practical, fully insurable alternative to a car.
How much does tricycle insurance cost?
A Velosurance policy starts at $100 per year, roughly $9 a month, and the insured value of your trike drives the premium more than any other factor. Your location, how you ride, the deductible you choose, and the coverages you select set the exact number. Insuring two bikes on one policy takes 10% off the bicycle coverage premium, and three or more takes 15%.
Is my trike covered if it is stolen?
Yes. Theft is covered whether the trike is taken from your home, your car, or your workplace, subject to the policy's locking conditions, and damage from an attempted theft is covered too. Left unattended in public, lock it to an immovable object with an appropriate security device; the policy sets no brand or price requirement, so your usual lock works. A stolen trike pays out at stated value, and every theft claim requires a police report, so file one the same day.
What if my trike is damaged while being transported?
Damage or loss in transit is covered, whether your trike is on a vehicle rack, checked with an airline, or shipped by courier, including rack incidents and rough carrier handling. Transit coverage is part of the base policy, so there is no add-on to buy before you load the trike on the back of the car.
Will I get the full value of my trike after a total loss?
Yes. The trike is insured at stated value with no depreciation, so a theft or total loss pays the value you insured it for rather than a check discounted for age and wear, enough to replace it with a comparable trike.
Can someone else ride my insured trike?
Yes. The policy is written on a permissive use basis: anyone riding the trike with your permission is an insured, so lending it to a family member or friend does not interrupt coverage. Trikes, with their stability and ease of operation, tend to be the one everyone in the household wants to try, and the coverage follows the trike, not just you.
Which optional coverages make sense for a trike ridden in the city?
City riding makes the case for all three. Liability comes first: sidewalks, bike lanes, and crosswalks keep a trike close to pedestrians and parked cars, where one mistake becomes someone else's claim against you. Medical gap is next, because an injury from sharing streets with traffic is the most likely claim a city rider files, and it reimburses the out-of-pocket bills your health plan leaves behind. Uninsured motorist rounds out the set, replacing losses beyond medical bills, such as lost wages, when an at-fault driver cannot pay. Each must be elected before an accident.
Do I need a driver's license to ride an electric trike?
No. As of 2026, no state requires a driver's license to ride an electric trike, including New Jersey, whose new e-bike licensing law specifically excludes trikes. Class 1, 2, and 3 electric trikes are regulated as bicycles, not motor vehicles, so there is no registration or license plate requirement either. If that changes, the place it changes first is state law, so check your state's rules if you ride a trike faster than Class 3 limits.
