About Tern
Tern was founded in 2011 in Taipei, Taiwan by Florence Shen and Joshua Hon, the wife and son of Dahon founder David Hon. The split was contested. Dahon filed suit in 2012 alleging breach of fiduciary duty; the parties settled in 2013. Tern emerged as an independent company focused on compact, utility-first bicycles that take cars off urban roads. The name comes from the Arctic tern, the longest-migrating animal on Earth.
The engineering philosophy is small wheels, long lifespans, and serious load capacity. Tern’s Atlas T-Tuned cockpit, OCL joint, and Andros stem are designed for repeated folding and unfolding without play. The GSD and HSD longtail platforms are rated to 440 lb gross vehicle weight, with frames, brakes, and racks built to UL 2849 and EN 17860 standards rather than ISO 4210 alone. Bosch supplies the motor and battery system on the GSD and HSD; the Quick Haul and Vektron run smaller Bosch Active Line packages tuned for a lower price point.
Tern operates from Taipei with offices in the US, China, Finland, and the UK, distributing through dealers in 65 countries. Five years on the frame, fork, and handlebar stem
Tern-branded or Tern-made frames, forks, and handlebar stems are warranted against defects in materials and workmanship for five years from the first retail purchase.
Register for Tern Care within 30 days for ten years
Owners who register for Tern Care within 30 days after the original purchase get ten years on Tern-branded or Tern-made frames, forks, and handlebar stems, counted from the date of the first retail purchase.
One year on parts, third-party parts are separate
All parts and components are warranted for one year from the first retail purchase. The coverage applies only to Tern or BioLogic branded parts. Parts from third parties such as Shimano, Suntour, or Bosch may be warrantied directly by their manufacturers.
Claims go through a dealer, transport is on you
Warranty claims are handled through an authorized Tern dealer or distributor. The owner is responsible for all costs of transporting the product to and from the dealer and presents proof of purchase, in physical or digital format.
Defects only: crash damage is excluded
The warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship. It does not apply to defects, malfunctions, or failures that result from crashes or collisions. Those are the losses a Velosurance policy is built for.
