About Gazelle

Cicli Gazelle was founded in 1892 in Dieren, Netherlands by Willem Kölling, a postal worker, and Rudolf Arentsen. They started by importing English bicycles, teaching customers to ride them, and trading parts. In 1902 they began building their own bikes under the Gazelle name, taking the brand from a deer Kölling watched bound across a road outside town. Production has stayed on the same Dieren site for more than 130 years, making it the oldest continuously operating bicycle factory in the Netherlands.

The factory in Dieren employs 550 workers and produces roughly 300,000 bicycles per year. The Dutch royal household added the Koninklijke (Royal) honorific to the Gazelle name in 1992, marking the eighth-millionth bike built. Pon Holdings, the same group that owns Cervélo and distributes Volkswagen in the Netherlands, acquired Gazelle in 2011. The company stayed in Dieren and kept its engineering and assembly in-house.

Gazelle’s identity is the Dutch upright city bike, and its US lineup now leans almost entirely on e-bikes: Bosch Performance Line motors, low step-through frames, integrated lights, fenders, racks, and chain or Gates carbon belt drives standard. The brand sells primarily through independent dealers and operates a US distribution office in Santa Cruz, California.

Most popular Gazelle models

Gazelle’s US lineup is an e-bike lineup, organized by use case rather than by frame discipline. Every model runs Bosch motors and Bosch batteries, ships with full fenders, integrated front and rear lights, a rear rack, and a ring lock; the differences come down to drivetrain choice (Shimano hub, Shimano derailleur, or Enviolo CVT with belt drive), battery capacity, and frame stance.

The Ultimate is the flagship commuter with short-travel front suspension and a premium Bosch drive unit. The Medeo is the sportier, more affordable platform aimed at riders coming from non-electric hybrids. The Eclipse is the long-range hybrid with a Bosch Smart System and Class 3 28 mph capability. The Arroyo brings the classic Dutch upright cruiser geometry to the Americas, and the Avignon is the premium step-thru with Enviolo 380 stepless shifting and a Gates carbon belt drive. Bikes in this tier carry replacement values that homeowner’s policies frequently cap below, which is where stand-alone commuter bike insurance fills the gap.
