About OPEN
OPEN is two people. Andy Kessler ran BMC as CEO for seven years and then international sales at Cervélo, where he met Gerard Vroomen, the engineer who started Cervélo with Phil White and left in 2011 when it was selling 30,000 bikes a year. They founded OPEN Cycle in Basel, Switzerland, with a motto that doubles as a business plan: working hard to stay small. No sponsorships, no marketing department, no flashy office.
The bike that made the name was the U.P., short for Unbeaten Path. Its dropped drive-side chainstay made room for a mountain bike tire inside road bike geometry, and a whole category of gravel bikes followed. The WI.DE. doubled the trick with two dropped chainstays, and the MIN.D. applied the same thinking to a classic-looking road bike with a continuous seat tube.
Ten years after the U.P., OPEN replaced it with the UP 2.0 family and the WIDE 2.0, made in Portugal and built around the OPEN BAR, a one-piece carbon bar-stem whose internal clamp adjusts stem length in 5 mm steps. OPEN sells framesets, with SRAM Force or Red XPLR AXS group kits and Zipp wheel kits as options, through dealers and its own site. Every frame carries a three-year warranty that becomes five when the owner activates it.

The UP 2.0 family is one frame in three versions, all tuned for 35 to 46 mm tires. The UP 2.0 ($4,200 frameset) gets the aero fork and rivnuts under the top tube for a strapless frame bag. The UP 2.0 Adventure swaps in the comfort cargo fork for bikepacking, and the UPPER 2.0 ($5,300) uses an ultralight layup and comes only in black. OPEN’s group kits add $2,300 for SRAM Force XPLR AXS or $3,700 for Red, and its Zipp wheel kits $1,200 or $1,800, which puts a complete UP 2.0 between $7,700 and $9,700.
The WIDE 2.0 ($4,200) takes over where the UP stops, with clearance for 50 to 66 mm tires. The MIN.D. ($2,900) is the road bike, built for 25 to 33 mm tires, and OPEN still sells the first-generation U.P. ($2,500) and WI.DE. ($2,800) framesets. OPEN's Warranty: What It Covers and Where It Stops
OPEN warrants its frames against material defects and design faults, and adds a crash replacement discount for owners who activate the frame. Five terms decide what that is worth to you.
Three years on the frame, five if activated within 30 days
An OPEN frame is covered for 3 years from the date of purchase under the standard warranty, and for 5 years if the frame is activated within 30 days of purchase. Activation is done online or by scanning the QR code on the bottom bracket.
One year on paint, two on OPEN-branded parts
Paint, decals, and coating are covered for 1 year, and OPEN-branded parts for 2 years. Wheels and components from other brands are excluded and go to their own manufacturers.
Initial buyer only, built by a trained mechanic
The warranty is valid only for the initial buyer and cannot be passed on or transferred. The bike must have been assembled and maintained by a properly trained mechanic, and claims are reported through an OPEN retailer with the claim form or purchase receipt.
Repair or replacement, with labor charged to the buyer
OPEN decides between repair and replacement, and a replacement may differ in model or color. Labor costs for warranty work are charged to the buyer, and warranty service does not extend the original warranty period.
Crash replacement: 40% off, for ten years
The warranty excludes the consequences of a fall and damage caused by accidents or impact. For activated frames, OPEN's crash replacement policy offers a 40% discount off the then-current MSRP for 10 years, which leaves the owner paying the other 60%.
