About Surly
Surly builds steel bikes for people who ride them hard. The brand started in 1998 in Bloomington, Minnesota, as a division of Quality Bicycle Products. Its founders were unimpressed with the late-1990s rush toward ultralight aluminum, so they went the other way: durable, forgiving, repairable steel.
Surly built a cult following on bikes that go the distance. The Long Haul Trucker became a touring icon, and in the 2010s Surly helped pioneer the modern fat bike, running its own machinery to make the wide rims and tires the category needed. Every Surly is steel, most accept racks and fenders, and the brand leans hard into versatility over specialization.
Surly’s current lineup spans touring, gravel, mountain, fat, and cargo. The Disc Trucker handles loaded touring, the Midnight Special and Straggler cover all-road and gravel, and the Karate Monkey, Krampus, and Lowside are the hardtails. The Sorceress is Surly’s steel full-suspension trail bike, the Wednesday, Ice Cream Truck, and Moonlander are the fat bikes, and the Big Dummy, Big Easy, and Skid Loader carry the loads.
Most popular Surly models
Surly’s drop-bar range goes from pavement to dirt. The Disc Trucker is the loaded-touring workhorse, the Midnight Special is the road-plus all-rounder, the Straggler is the disc-brake gravel bike, and the Bridge Club is the accessible adventure bike. The Preamble is the entry point, a steel all-road bike in flat-bar and drop-bar versions, and the Ogre is the flat-bar 29er adventure tourer.
On the trail, the Karate Monkey and Krampus are Surly’s 29er hardtails, the Lowside is the 27.5-inch trail hardtail, and the Sorceress is the steel full-suspension trail bike. The Grappler is the drop-bar bikepacking machine, and the Wednesday, Ice Cream Truck, and Moonlander are the fat bikes built for snow and sand. The Big Dummy is Surly’s longtail cargo bike, the Big Easy adds a Bosch motor, and the Skid Loader is the electric cargo hauler. A loaded Big Dummy, Big Easy, or Skid Loader carries a replacement value and a load of gear that a homeowner’s policy rarely covers, which is where standalone cargo bike insurance fills the gap.
