About Trek
Trek was founded in 1976 by Richard Burke and Bevil Hogg in a red barn in Waterloo, Wisconsin, with a goal of building premium steel frames for the American market at a time when most quality bicycles were imported. In its early years, Trek also manufactured bikes under contract for other brands including Gary Fisher, LeMond, Klein, and Villiger before building enough distribution and identity to scale its own label.
The Waterloo facility grew into Trek’s global headquarters. Trek acquired Gary Fisher Mountain Bikes in 1993 and Klein Bicycles in 1995, absorbing two influential American brands and deepening its engineering bench. The Bontrager components label, also acquired in the 1990s, became Trek’s house brand for helmets, wheels, and accessories.
Trek’s professional racing program defined the brand in road cycling. The Madone, Trek’s flagship race bike, was purpose-built for WorldTour competition and carried riders to multiple Tour de France victories across two decades. Off-road, the Supercaliber XC hardtail won Olympic gold at the Tokyo 2020 Games. Today, Trek operates in more than 100 countries and remains privately held and headquartered in Waterloo, Wisconsin.
Most popular Trek models
Trek’s lineup spans every drop-bar and flat-bar discipline at every price tier, anchored by OCLV carbon frame technology and the IsoSpeed compliance system that’s evolved across multiple frame generations.
The road family leads with the Madone Gen 8, unified with the discontinued Émonda into a single sub-7.5 kg aero race platform raced by Lidl-Trek. The Domane adds longer reach and IsoSpeed decouplers front and rear for endurance and cobbled-classic comfort. The Checkpoint is the gravel platform with 45mm clearance and integrated frame storage, topping out at the Checkmate SLR competition trim. Trek’s MTB family covers the full travel spectrum — Supercaliber for XC World Cup, Top Fuel for XC trail, Fuel EX for everyday trail, and Slash for enduro. The Marlin hardtail anchors the entry tier under $1,400.
Trek’s e-bike lineup is deliberately wide. The Verve+ is the entry urban commuter, the Powerfly is the mid-tier Bosch-powered e-MTB, and the Rail is the premium e-MTB with TQ HPR50 motors on lightweight Rail+ trims or Bosch Performance Line CX on standard trims. The Verve+ replaces a car for daily errands and short commutes, which is the value at risk that homeowner’s policies frequently cap below — where stand-alone commuter bike insurance from Velosurance fills the gap.

The enduro platform — 170mm rear / 180mm front travel, mixed 29er/27.5 wheel options, ABP suspension with high-pivot idler routing on top trims. Built for big-mountain enduro racing and bike-park days.

The XC race-trail crossover — 120mm rear / 130mm front travel, race geometry on top trims with progressive descending capability. Trek-Pirelli World Cup XC team uses Top Fuel for marathon and short-track events.

The dedicated XC World Cup race full-suspension platform — 80mm rear / 110mm front travel with IsoStrut single-pivot rear suspension that flexes through the seat tube. Won the 2024 Olympic XC gold medal under Tom Pidcock.

The entry-level Alpha Silver Aluminum hardtail — 100mm SR Suntour front fork on top trims, Shimano 1x or 2x drivetrains, 27.5 or 29er wheels by size. The bike most new riders buy as their first mountain bike.
