About Orbea

Orbea’s story starts in 1840 in Eibar, Basque Country, Spain, where the company manufactured rifles and guns. The shift to bicycles came in 1930, when Orbea retooled its metalworking infrastructure for a different kind of frame. By 1934, Orbea bikes were racing in the Tour de France under Mariano Canardo, making the brand one of the earliest to build a professional road racing program.

Orbea operates as a worker-owned cooperative within the Mondragon Corporation, a federation of cooperatives headquartered in the Basque Country. That ownership model has shaped Orbea’s culture since it was formalized: profits are distributed among worker-members, and strategic decisions are made by the cooperative rather than external shareholders. It is a genuinely unusual structure in the global cycling industry and influences everything from factory culture to product development.

The company manufactures from its base in Mallabia, Basque Country, with carbon frame production also running in Portugal and Asia. Orbea sponsored the Euskaltel-Euskadi professional road team, the famous all-Basque squad, through the team’s peak years. Today the lineup spans road racing, triathlon, mountain biking, gravel, and a full electric bike range.

Most popular Orbea models

Orbea’s road lineup is built around two primary platforms. The Orca is the pure climbing and all-round race bike: a lightweight carbon frame with responsive geometry and one of the more accessible custom paint programs in the industry through Orbea MyO. The Orca Aero takes the same platform into aerodynamic territory, with integrated cables and tube shaping tested in the wind tunnel. The Avant rounds out road with an endurance geometry suited to long days over varied terrain. For riders who race or train seriously on any of these, dedicated road bike insurance covers your Orbea at full replacement value against theft, crashes, and transit damage.

Mountain bikes span three disciplines. The Oiz is an XC race bike optimized for low weight and pedaling efficiency. The Rallon is the enduro platform, with longer travel and progressive geometry built for technical descents. The Alma is a hardtail for XC riders who want race-caliber geometry without the full-suspension price. Gravel is handled by the Terra, a dedicated mixed-surface platform with clearance for 45mm-plus tires. The Ordu is Orbea’s triathlon and time trial machine, used by Ironman athletes at the top level of the sport. Riders who own an Oiz, Rallon, or Alma can protect their investment with mountain bike insurance from Velosurance, covering full replacement value against theft, crashes, and transit damage.

The electric lineup covers road and mountain. The Gain is a discreet e-road bike with a compact integrated motor and battery that keeps the silhouette close to a standard road bike. The Rise is a lightweight e-MTB built around minimal motor intervention for a more natural riding feel. The Wild FS and Keram handle heavier-duty e-MTB use. The Vibe and Optima serve the urban commuter segment as city e-bikes designed for daily transport.
