About Canyon

Canyon was founded in 1985 in Koblenz, Germany by Roman Arnold, initially as a mail-order parts business called Radsport Arnold. The company began building complete bicycles under the Canyon name in 1996 and committed to a single distribution model: direct-to-consumer, factory to rider, with no bike-shop middlemen. The pitch was margin compression in the customer’s favor, and it built Canyon into one of Europe’s largest bicycle brands within two decades.

Engineering is centered on carbon fiber, with the company operating its own R&D and prototyping facilities at the Koblenz headquarters. Canyon’s aero road platform (Aeroad), all-around climbing platform (Ultimate), and triathlon platform (Speedmax) are designed in-house and produced in Asia under Canyon-supervised tooling. The brand was acquired by Groupe Bruxelles Lambert, a Belgian holding company, in 2020; Arnold retains a minority stake.

Canyon’s racing program defines its public identity. Movistar Team has raced on Canyon road bikes since 2014, with Nairo Quintana podiuming multiple Grand Tours on the Ultimate. Alpecin-Deceuninck riders Mathieu van der Poel and Jasper Philipsen race the Aeroad, with van der Poel taking the 2023 UCI Road World Championship and the 2023 Paris-Roubaix, and Philipsen claiming the 2024 Tour de France points classification. Canyon entered the US market in 2017 and now ships to more than 100 countries.

Most popular Canyon models

Canyon’s lineup covers every drop-bar and flat-bar discipline a serious rider buys, anchored by carbon platforms designed around the demands of WorldTour racing and adapted downward to the consumer price ladder.

The road family leads with the Ultimate, a climbing-first all-rounder ridden by Movistar Team, and the Aeroad, the aero race bike that carried Mathieu van der Poel to the 2023 World Championship. The Endurace adds longer reach geometry and 35mm tire clearance for all-day comfort. The Grizl is Canyon’s gravel platform with clearance up to 50mm. Off-road, the Spectral is the 150mm-front / 140mm-rear trail bike that anchors the MTB line, with the Spectral:ON adding a Bosch Performance Line CX motor for e-MTB riders. The Speedmax CF SLX is Canyon’s triathlon superbike, the platform Jan Frodeno used to win multiple Ironman World Championships. Riders who race or train on an Ultimate, Aeroad, or Endurace carry replacement values that homeowner’s policies typically cap below, which is where dedicated road bike insurance fills the gap.
