About Salsa
Salsa Cycles started in 1982 when Ross Shafer began building frames and machining stems in Petaluma, California. Quality Bicycle Products bought the brand in 1997 and moved it to Bloomington, Minnesota, where it shares a campus with Surly. The mission narrowed over time to one idea: adventure by bike.
Salsa helped invent the modern adventure category. The Fargo arrived in 2008 as a drop-bar bike built to go off-road and carry gear, and the Warbird followed in 2012 as one of the first purpose-built gravel race bikes. The Cutthroat was designed around the Tour Divide, the 2,700-mile self-supported race down the Continental Divide. Mounts, clearance, and stable geometry are the throughline.
Salsa’s current lineup runs from gravel race to bikepacking to mountain. The Flyway and Warbird cover gravel racing, the Cutthroat and Fargo handle loaded backcountry routes, and the Journeyer is the accessible all-road bike. The Timberjack, Rangefinder, Spearfish, and Blackthorn are the mountain bikes, and the Confluence and Tributary add motors to the adventure formula.
Most popular Salsa models
Salsa’s drop-bar range is the heart of the brand. The Flyway is the carbon gravel race bike, the Warbird is the proven gravel platform Salsa has built since 2012, and the Cutthroat is the carbon bikepacking bike designed around the Tour Divide. The Fargo is the off-road drop-bar tourer, and the Journeyer is the accessible all-road bike that does pavement, gravel, and light loads.
The Warroad is Salsa’s endurance road bike for long days on pavement, and it anchors a deep mountain range: the Timberjack and Rangefinder hardtails, the Spearfish cross-country full-suspension bike, and the Blackthorn trail bike. The Confluence and Tributary are the adventure e-bikes. A carbon Warroad built with electronic shifting runs past $7,000, the kind of replacement value a homeowner’s policy rarely matches, which is where stand-alone road bike insurance earns its place.
