About Electra
Electra was founded in 1993 by Benno Banziger and Jeano Erforth in Vista, California, with a design-first take on the bicycle. Where the rest of the industry sold performance and weight, Electra sold posture, paint, and chrome. The brand’s first cruisers leaned into the postwar Schwinn aesthetic with hand-built details and color-matched components, and it built a following on style before it built one on volume.
Flat Foot Technology, patented in 2003, defined the brand. The geometry pushes the bottom bracket forward of the seat tube so a rider can keep both feet flat on the ground while seated, which makes mounting and stopping intuitive for casual and first-time riders. The Townie, launched on that platform, became the best-selling bicycle of its category in the US and the model the brand is still organized around.
Trek Bicycle acquired Electra in 2014 and runs it as a standalone brand inside the Trek group. The lineup now spans pedal cruisers like the Townie, Cruiser, and Loft and a growing electric range under the Go! suffix on Bosch Performance Line and Active Line mid-drives. Headquarters remain in Vista, with distribution through Trek’s US dealer network.
Most popular Electra models
Electra is organized around three pedal platforms and a parallel electric range. The Townie 7D is the brand’s flagship, a Flat Foot Technology cruiser with a 7-speed Shimano drivetrain and upright posture that defined the entry-cruiser category in the US. The Cruiser 7D and Cruiser Lux 7D are the traditional beach-cruiser silhouettes with single-piece cranks, balloon tires, and color-first paint. The Loft 7D is the urban-leaning step-thru with smaller 700c wheels, a more compact frame, and a tighter geometry for city riding.
The Go! electric range mirrors the same platforms. The Townie Go! 7D EQ and Townie Go! 5i EQ run a Bosch Active Line mid-drive with the same Flat Foot geometry; the Townie Go! S adds a higher-output motor and an integrated rack and lights. The Townie Path Go! steps up to a Bosch Performance Line motor with 9-speed gearing for hills and longer rides. The Loft Go! 7D EQ electrifies the urban Loft frame, and the Vale Go! 9D EQ and Ponto Go! S extend the lineup with hybrid-style commuter geometry. Every Electra cruiser is a daily errand bike, which is the value at risk that homeowner’s policies frequently cap below, where stand-alone commuter bike insurance from Velosurance fills the gap.
