About Brompton

Brompton was founded in 1975 by Andrew Ritchie, an engineer working out of his flat in South Kensington, London. The bicycle is named after Brompton Oratory, the church visible from the window where Ritchie sketched the first prototype. Each Brompton is built around the same three-stage fold he patented that decade: rear wheel under the main frame, front wheel hinged inward, handlebars folded down, all in roughly 20 seconds to a parcel measuring 22 by 12 by 22 inches.

The company scaled out of a small workshop in west London into a purpose-built factory in Greenford, where every frame is still hand-brazed and every bike assembled. Will Butler-Adams took over as CEO in 2008 and grew Brompton from a UK cult brand into a global folding-bike standard, with retail flagships in London, New York, and beyond. The 16-inch wheel and the orange-rolled wordmark have become the visual shorthand for “folding bike” worldwide.

The current lineup spans steel A Line and C Line bikes through the partial-titanium P Line and the fully titanium T Line, plus the 20-inch-wheel G Line for gravel and rough urban routes. The electric range runs on Brompton’s e-Motiq platform, a UK-engineered rear-hub system that moved the motor off the front wheel for better traction and balance, with UL 2849 certification for legal sale in New York City.

The fold is the product. A 20-second three-stage fold to a 22-by-12-by-22-inch parcel that rolls on rack wheels, fits under a restaurant table, and stows as carry-on on most regional flights. Every Brompton uses the same hinged geometry across the A, C, P, T, and G Lines; the difference between them is weight, gearing, wheel size, and price.

The steel A Line and C Line are the volume products and the longest-running platforms, with 16-inch wheels and Sturmey-Archer or Shimano internal gear hubs. The P Line drops 4.4 lb by bonding a hand-brazed titanium rear triangle to a steel main frame; the T Line goes full titanium for the lightest Brompton ever shipped at 15.3 lb on the T Line One. The G Line moves to 20-inch wheels, hydraulic disc brakes, and an 8-speed Shimano Alfine hub for gravel paths and uneven asphalt. The Electric C Line and Electric G Line run on Brompton’s e-Motiq platform — a 250W rear-hub motor, a 300Wh battery, and up to 56 miles of range — which carries the kind of replacement value that homeowner’s policies frequently cap below, where stand-alone electric bike insurance fills the gap.
