About VanMoof
Taco and Ties Carlier founded VanMoof in Amsterdam in May 2009, and their first bike reached the US the same year through the New York design brand Areaware. The company went electric in 2014 and then all-electric, building in Taiwan and selling in 32 countries from flagship stores in Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris, London, Tokyo, and New York. The 2018 Electrified S2 and X2 introduced the Kick Lock, an alarm, and a built-in SIM for tracking, and took 2,500 online orders in their first 24 hours; the 2020 S3 and X3 cut the price to $1,998 and became the bikes most Americans picture when they hear the name.
Growth outran the balance sheet. VanMoof raised more than $100 million in venture capital, grew sales from $12 million in 2018 to nearly $48 million in 2019, employed its own bike hunters to recover stolen bikes, and still ran out of cash: sales stopped on June 29, 2023, the Dutch court declared the company bankrupt on July 17 with 143.8 million euros owed to creditors, and the US unit filed for Chapter 15 in New York on August 19. On August 31, 2023, Lavoie, the e-scooter arm of McLaren Applied, bought the brand for tens of millions of pounds.
The new VanMoof sells through partner bike shops instead of its own stores. It re-engineered the S5 and A5 for reliability and relaunched them in the Netherlands, Germany, and France in April 2024 and in the UK that November, with a repair network that passed 50 locations across seven countries. The S6 and S6 Open followed in June 2025 at 3,298 euros, with a three-year warranty, a 3-speed Autoshift hub, and Apple Find My built in. The US is not yet back on the map: the former US subscription business and its hubs went to Rybit, which services legacy bikes in New York, Seattle, and San Francisco.
Most popular VanMoof models
The current bikes are the S6 and S6 Open, both with a 250W front hub motor, 68 Nm, a 487Wh battery good for 60 to 150 km, a 3-speed Autoshift hub, the Gen 6 Kick Lock, and a 23 kg weight; the S6 rolls on 27.5 inch wheels for riders up to 210 cm and the S6 Open drops the top tube and the wheel size to 24 inches for riders from 150 cm. Behind them sit the re-engineered S5 and step-in A5 from 2022, the first VanMoofs with a torque sensor and LED Halo rings, which sold in the US at $2,998 to $3,498 before the bankruptcy.
The legacy bikes are the ones most US owners ride. The S3 and X3 of 2020 paired a 350W motor and 59 Nm with a 504Wh battery, a 4-speed electronic shifter, hydraulic brakes, and a 20 mph US top speed at $1,998. The 2018 S2 and X2 were the originals with the Kick Lock and alarm at $3,398. A VanMoof’s anti-theft system tracks the bike; it does not pay for it, which is the job of electric bike insurance, where a stolen bike pays out at the value you insured it for, subject to the policy’s locking conditions.

The 2025 flagship: 250W front hub motor with 68 Nm, 487Wh battery for 60 to 150 km, 3-speed Autoshift hub, Gen 6 Kick Lock, Apple Find My, 27.5 inch wheels, 23 kg, sold in Europe at 3,298 euros (about $3,750).

The low-step S6 on 24 inch wheels for riders from 150 cm, with the same motor, battery, Autoshift hub, Kick Lock, and Find My tracking, at the same 3,298 euro price.

The 2022 straight-frame flagship, re-engineered for the 2024 relaunch: torque sensor, LED Halo rings on the bars, 487Wh battery for 60 to 150 km, 3-speed automatic shifting, and the full anti-theft suite.

The step-in sibling of the S5 with a lowered frame and smaller wheels, a 463Wh battery for 55 to 140 km, the same torque sensor, Halo rings, and Kick Lock.

The 2020 bestseller: 350W front hub motor with 59 Nm, 504Wh battery for 60 to 150 km, 4-speed electronic shifting, hydraulic brakes, Turbo Boost, Kick Lock, and a 20 mph US top speed on 28 inch wheels.

The S3 drivetrain in a one-size frame on 24 inch wheels, built for riders from 155 cm and for apartments with narrow halls.

The 2018 Electrified S2 that introduced the Kick Lock, alarm, rider recognition, and matrix display: 504Wh battery, up to 150 km of range, for riders 170 to 210 cm.

The compact 2018 Electrified X2 with the same anti-theft package and battery as the S2, sized for riders 155 to 200 cm.
VanMoof's Warranty: What It Covers and Where It Stops
The relaunched VanMoof backs the S6 for three years and its earlier models for two, through its partner shops, and the pre-2023 company's promises died with it. Five terms decide what that is worth to you.
Three years on the S6, two years on the electronics of earlier models
For the S6, VanMoof covers frame defects and parts and accessories for three years, and the battery, motor, and ECU for three years or 7,500 km in Europe, the UK, and Asia. The guidelines for the wider range put battery, motor, and ECU at two years or 7,500 km, with battery capacity guaranteed at 70% when the bike is maintained as instructed, firmware kept current, and third-party apps kept off it.
In the US the electronics term is one year or 3,750 km
VanMoof's own table cuts the battery, motor, and ECU term to one year or 3,750 km for the US. Ordinary parts failures, play in parts, and loss of brake fluid are covered only in the first four weeks or 150 km, and the guidelines state that no warranty applies once a bike has done more than 150 km since its last repair, outside the electronics and frame items listed.
Claims go through a VanMoof Partner, who bills VanMoof
Take the bike and the original proof of purchase to a local VanMoof Partner for diagnosis. If the issue is covered, the partner repairs it on site and settles covered parts and labor directly with VanMoof. Keep the original box: replacement boxes are not covered and cost extra.
Bikes from the old company are serviced, not warranted
The US unit of the original VanMoof filed for Chapter 15 in August 2023 and its subscriptions and hubs went to Rybit, which services legacy bikes in New York, Seattle, and San Francisco. VanMoof's US help pages say those repairs cannot be claimed under a warranty and are paid on location.
Accidents, wear, modifications, and theft are out
The never-warranty list covers drivetrain, tires, and brakes, the bike falling over or anything falling on it, accidents, cosmetic damage, punctures, broken spokes, chargers not supplied by VanMoof, and aftermarket or modified components; modifications to the frame or components void coverage. Theft is not mentioned at all, and the anti-theft system only tracks a bike. Paying for a stolen or crashed VanMoof is what a Velosurance policy is for.
Summary of the VanMoof Help Center, Warranty & Support and New Vehicle Limited Warranty Guidelines, reviewed October 15, 2026. Applies to VanMoof e-bikes bought new from the relaunched company or a VanMoof Partner, with the S6 series on three-year terms and earlier models on the two-year guidelines. Bikes sold by the original company before its July 2023 bankruptcy have no manufacturer warranty left to claim. The manufacturer decides every warranty claim, and its full published terms govern.
