About Pedego Electric Bikes
Pedego launched in 2008 in Newport Beach, California, founded by Don DiCostanzo and Terry Sherry with a straightforward premise: most Americans would ride electric bikes if the bikes were comfortable, approachable, and backed by knowledgeable local dealers. DiCostanzo came from a retail background, and that orientation shaped Pedego from the start. Rather than selling online or through big-box retailers, Pedego built a franchise network of locally owned stores.
That network grew to more than 200 locations across North America. Incline Equity Partners acquired the company in 2017, accelerating store expansion while preserving the franchise structure. The model means buyers have a nearby dealer who stocks parts, performs service, and organizes group rides, a fundamentally different ownership experience from mail-order e-bikes.
All Pedego models are Class 2, offering both throttle and pedal assist up to 20 mph. The design language is consistent across the lineup: step-through frames, upright riding position, fat tires, and relaxed gearing built for comfort rather than performance cycling. Pedego targets riders who want to go farther than a conventional bike allows without a steep learning curve or complex maintenance. The company has sold over 100,000 bikes and maintains one of the largest franchise retail networks of any e-bike brand in the US.
Most popular Pedego models
Pedego’s flagship is the Interceptor, a fat-tire cruiser with a 750W hub motor available in step-through and step-over frame options. Throttle plus pedal assist, upright geometry, and a padded saddle make it one of the more accessible entry points into e-biking. The Interceptor Platinum adds a higher-capacity battery and upgraded components for extended range on the same platform. The Comfort Cruiser is the lowest step-through model in the lineup, built specifically for riders who prioritize ease of mounting and dismounting.
Urban commuting is handled by the City Commuter and City Commuter Platinum, which carry the throttle-plus-assist setup on an urban-optimized frame with fenders, a rear rack, and 700c wheels for pavement efficiency. The City Commuter Mid Drive swaps the hub motor for a mid-drive unit, shifting more torque through the drivetrain for better performance on hilly routes. Riders who depend on any of these models for daily transportation can protect their investment with commuter bike insurance.
Off-road options start with the Trail Tracker, a front-suspension model built around 26x4-inch tires for light trail and gravel use. The Elevate targets steeper terrain with a mid-drive motor suited to sustained climbing. The Boomerang is a lighter step-through option for city and recreation riders who want a less-cruiser-styled silhouette. The Trike rounds out the lineup with a third wheel and a rear cargo trunk for maximum stability. Pedego bikes retail from around $2,000 to over $5,000, and dedicated electric bike insurance from Velosurance covers your Pedego at full replacement value against theft, crash damage, and transit loss.
