How do bicycle insurance claims work?

Last updated

A bicycle insurance claim moves through three steps: report the loss by following the steps on our claims page, submit your documentation, and get paid. A claims manager contacts you within two business days of filing, and most claims are paid in less than 14 business days.

Fault does not affect the claim. The policy is all-risk, meaning anything not specifically excluded is covered, so a crash you caused is handled the same way as one you did not. The assessment works from what you submit, which is why the documentation step decides how fast the claim moves.

What will the claims manager ask for?

Clear photos of the damage from several angles, your written account of how the loss happened, and a repair estimate from your bike shop. For a theft, add the police report (file it the same day), a photo of the defeated lock, and receipts for any gear or apparel claimed. A complete first submission is the single biggest factor in a fast payout; the step-by-step procedure is in how to file a claim.

How is the payout calculated?

A repairable bike is paid at the retail cost of the repair, including labor, even for a complete rebuild, minus your deductible. A total loss pays the value you insured the bike for, minus the deductible, with no depreciation for age. One deductible applies to each covered loss, and the timeline from filing to payment is covered in how long a claim takes to pay.
