Why do I need specialty bicycle insurance?
Last updated
Specialty bicycle insurance gives your bike a policy designed around how cyclists actually ride. It is built to cover all risks of the cycling lifestyle, from theft at home and away from home to crash damage and losses in transit, with the bike insured for what it actually costs to replace.
Standard insurance treats a bicycle as ordinary personal property. Those policies frequently come with significant limitations, may not adequately cover the replacement cost of a premium bicycle, and many outright exclude e-bikes. The full shopping checklist is in A buyer's guide to the best bicycle and e-bike insurance.
What does specialty bicycle insurance cover?
The policy covers the bike for all types of accidental damage as well as theft at home and away from home when securely locked to an immovable object, and it stays covered while in transit by road or air. The insured value does not depreciate with age, so claim on an older bike is still settled at its full insured amount. The story behind the policy is in what is Velosurance.
Does specialty insurance cover Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 e-bikes?
Yes, a specialty policy insures all three classes: Class 1, where the motor assists only while you pedal up to 20 miles per hour; Class 2, with a throttle and a top assisted speed of 20 miles per hour; and Class 3, with a top assisted speed of 28 miles per hour. That matters because many standard policies exclude e-bikes entirely. The details are in do you cover e-bikes.
