Do you cover e-bikes and e-trikes?

Last updated

Yes, Velosurance covers e-bikes and e-trikes, and we cover all three classes. Your Class 1, 2, or 3 e-bike is protected by an all-risk, replacement-cost policy with no depreciation or deduction for the age of the e-bike, so a covered loss is settled at what it costs to replace your e-bike, not its used resale value.

The three classes break down by how the motor is engaged and how fast it will carry you:

  • Class 1: top speed of 20 miles per hour, with the electric motor working only while the rider is pedaling.
  • Class 2: top speed of 20 miles per hour, but with a throttle that can power the bike while you are not pedaling.
  • Class 3: top speed of 28 miles per hour, fitted with a speedometer, and may or may not have a throttle.

With Class 3 e-bikes the throttle rules depend on the state writing them. California, for example, does not allow Class 3 e-bikes to have throttles at all. In other states a throttle is allowed as long as it works only up to 20 miles per hour, while pedal-assisted electric power continues up to 28 miles per hour.

What coverage does my e-bike get?

An e-bike carries the same all-risk, replacement-cost protection as any other insured bike: theft, crash damage, vandalism, and more, settled at replacement cost with no depreciation for age. You set the insured value, choose your deductible, and can add coverages such as medical payments and liability the same way you would for a traditional bike.

Which class of e-bikes and e-trikes do you insure?

We insure all three. Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 e-bikes all qualify, whatever the motor and throttle configuration your state permits. If you are unsure which class your e-bike/e-trike is, the manufacturer's label or spec sheet states it, and the top speed and throttle behavior above will help you place it.
