Uninsured Motorist Coverage

Last updated

Uninsured Motorist Coverage is an optional coverage that protects the insured bicycle rider from medical and other related expenses incurred from physical contact with a hit-and-run, uninsured, or underinsured motorist. Think of it as the cycling equivalent of the Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UIM) coverage on an auto policy: when the driver who hit you cannot pay, this coverage pays the medical and related expenses of the car-bicycle accident.

Which limit can I add to my policy?

Uninsured Motorist Coverage can be added to a Velosurance bicycle insurance policy with a $10,000 or $25,000 limit. The $25,000 maximum is the prudent pick if you ride in traffic regularly, and it works alongside the optional medical gap coverage that handles your health plan's deductibles and co-pays.

When do I need it?

The deciding question is whether the UIM coverage on your auto policy follows you onto the bike. There are states where UIM coverage does not extend to bicycles, so if you share the road with cars and your auto policy leaves that gap, this coverage fills it.
