Are components stolen off my locked bike covered?
Last updated
Yes. The policy defines the insured bicycle to include its fixed accessories and removable parts, so wheels, a saddle and seatpost, a derailleur, a handlebar, or a removable e-bike battery stolen off the bike are a covered loss under the bike's physical damage coverage, subject to the policy's locking conditions. The claim pays to replace the missing parts with like kind and quality, minus your deductible.
The locking conditions are the same as for the whole bike. Away from home, the frame must have been locked to an immovable object with a key or combination lock; at home, the theft must show signs of forcible entry. Every theft claim needs a police report detailing the time, place, and manner of the theft and the lock used, so file one the same day even when only a wheel is gone. The full set is in the bike theft coverage conditions.
Is my spare wheelset covered too?
Yes, under its own limit. Parts that belong on the bike but were not mounted when the loss happened, such as a spare wheelset or race-day tires, fall under spare parts coverage, included with the bike's physical damage coverage at no extra cost: up to $500 per loss and $1,000 for the policy term, separate from the limit on the bike. The same locking conditions and police report apply. Both coverages are explained in do you cover apparel and spare parts.
How do I protect upgrades and keep the claim simple?
Insure them. Accessories added beyond the manufacturer's original specification are covered only when their value is included in the bike's insured value, so after a wheelset or drivetrain upgrade, raise the value through changing your policy. On the rack, run the U-lock through the frame and rear wheel, chain the front wheel, fit locking skewers and a locking seat collar, and take the battery and display with you. Photograph the bike with its components and keep the receipts for upgrades: they prove what was on the bike when it was stripped. Damage a thief leaves behind without taking anything is a separate claim, covered in damage from a failed theft attempt.
