The USA Triathlon member discount
Active USA Triathlon members receive a 10% discount on the bicycle coverage premium of a Velosurance policy. USA Triathlon is the Olympic-recognized national governing body for the sport, and any active annual membership at the Silver, Gold, or Platinum tier qualifies. The discount stacks with the multi-bike discount on the same policy.
Discount
10% off the bicycle coverage premium for any triathlete with an active USA Triathlon annual membership at the time the policy is bound or renewed.
Who qualifies
Silver, Gold, and Platinum annual memberships. Bronze single-event memberships do not qualify, since they lapse immediately after the race they are issued for.
Stacking
Combines with the multi-bike discount on the same policy. A triathlete who insures a tri bike and a road bike pays 20% less on the bicycle coverage premium; three or more bikes earn 25%.
Race coverage
A USA Triathlon membership does not automatically add race coverage to the policy. Race coverage is a separate selection ("competitive usage") elected at the quote stage and can be added or removed any time during the term, so the premium tracks actual exposure.
USA Triathlon and the member discount
USA Triathlon is the national governing body for triathlon, duathlon, and multisport in the United States, sanctioning hundreds of races each year from sprint-distance events through long-course championships. Whether you race local sprints, line up for the USA Triathlon National Championships, train for an off-road or gravel triathlon, or simply hold an annual membership to compete in your local club's events, your USA Triathlon membership reflects a level of engagement and skill that Velosurance recognizes with a 10% discount on your bicycle coverage premium.
USA Triathlon's authority comes from dual recognition: the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee designates USA Triathlon as the National Governing Body for the sport, and World Triathlon (formerly the ITU) recognizes USA Triathlon as the U.S. national federation for international competition. That dual designation is what allows USA Triathlon to select and field the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic triathlon teams, and it is what gives Age Group Team USA athletes their place at the World Triathlon Age Group World Championships.
The discount is not limited to elite age-groupers or to athletes competing for a Team USA slot. Any active USA Triathlon annual membership at the Silver, Gold, or Platinum tier qualifies. Bronze single-event memberships do not, because they lapse immediately after the race they are issued for.
Why USA Triathlon members make sense as a discount class
Velosurance underwrites cyclists, which means we look closely at who is on the bike, not just what is on the bike. USA Triathlon annual members tend to share a profile that aligns with lower-than-average claim frequency. They are passionate athletes, and that passion shows up in the level of care and due diligence they bring to choosing, training on, and racing their bikes.
None of that eliminates risk. Race-day crashes, training-ride incidents, and damage in transit can happen to anyone. But it does mean that the average USA Triathlon member is statistically less likely to file a claim than a randomly selected cyclist of unknown experience. The 10% discount passes that benefit back to the member.
Coverages that matter to triathletes
Travel and transit are the most distinctive coverage needs for competitive triathletes. Velosurance covers crash and impact damage during transit and pays at the agreed value when a frame is declared a total loss. For athletes traveling internationally, worldwide coverage is available as an option that extends every protection on the policy to any country in the world.
Theft coverage is equally important. Velosurance pays theft claims regardless of where the bike was stored, as long as reasonable care was taken, and the agreed-value structure ensures the replacement is not depreciated by the bike's age or component wear.
Training crashes happen, and the Velosurance claims process is designed for the timeline a triathlete actually needs: turn a damaged bike around before the next race, not at the pace of a generic property claim.
USA Triathlon membership does not automatically add race coverage. Race coverage is a separate selection elected during the quoting process by choosing "competitive usage," and it can be added or removed at any point during the policy term. Many triathletes opt in only for the racing season and remove it during the off-season.

Two extras come standard with every Velosurance Physical Damage policy at no additional premium: rental reimbursement (up to $250 per occurrence, no deductible) toward a substitute bike when a covered loss strikes more than 50 miles from the insured location at an organized event, trip, or race, and competitive event fee reimbursement (up to $500 per event, $1,000 per policy year, no deductible) toward nonrefundable entry fees when a covered loss prevents you from competing.
Combining the USA Triathlon discount with other discounts
Most competitive triathletes own at least two bikes. The tri bike is for race day and threshold intervals; a separate road bike covers base miles, group rides, and travel days where a tri bike is impractical. Some triathletes also own a gravel bike, a mountain bike, or a winter-only training bike. A USA Triathlon member who insures more than one bike on a Velosurance policy receives both the 10% USA Triathlon discount and the multi-bike discount (10% for two bikes, 15% for three or more) on the bicycle coverage premium.
The combined discount can be substantial. A two-bike household pairing a $9,000 tri bike and a $5,500 road bike under a single policy qualifies for both the multi-bike and USA Triathlon discounts simultaneously. The savings show up clearly in the quote, and they recur every year as long as the membership remains active and the bikes remain on the policy.
How to apply the USA Triathlon discount to a quote
When you request a quote from Velosurance, you will be asked whether you hold an active USA Triathlon annual membership. The discount is applied automatically before the premium is finalized.
If you join USA Triathlon mid-term (for example, after deciding to register for a sanctioned half-distance race in the second half of the year), you can notify Velosurance and have the discount applied prospectively. The discount cannot be applied retroactively to premium that has already been paid, but it will be reflected in the next renewal or in any mid-term endorsement that recalculates the premium.
Renewal is straightforward. Velosurance verifies USA Triathlon membership status at each renewal cycle. As long as the annual membership remains active, the discount carries forward without any action required from the policyholder. Members who use USA Triathlon's auto-renewal option tend to maintain continuous eligibility from one year to the next.
Race week, packing, and the moments that matter most
Most triathlon claims that Velosurance handles for USA Triathlon members do not occur during a race. They occur during the days surrounding it. Loading the bike into a travel case on the morning of a flight, picking it up at oversized baggage in an unfamiliar airport, reassembling it in a hotel room, riding the course the day before the event, racking it overnight in transition, and breaking it down again for the trip home all create handling moments where damage and theft are more likely than they are during the race itself.
Velosurance coverage is in force during every one of those moments. Travel and transit are explicitly covered. Hotel storage, including informal storage in a bike box or against a wall in a hotel room, is covered. Transition area exposure is covered. Pre-ride and shake-out rides on the course are covered. The agreed value structure means that if a bike is damaged or lost during race week, the policyholder is not arguing with an adjuster over depreciation while trying to also recover for a planned race.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which USA Triathlon memberships qualify for the discount?
Any active annual membership at the Silver, Gold, or Platinum tier qualifies. Bronze single-event memberships do not, since they lapse immediately after the race they are issued for. If you upgrade from a Bronze single-event to an annual tier during the policy term, you can notify Velosurance and have the discount applied prospectively.
Does the USA Triathlon discount stack with the multi-bike discount?
Yes. The two are separate categories and apply together. Most age-group triathletes own both a tri bike and a road bike, and a two-bike policy held by a USA Triathlon member receives the 10% multi-bike discount and the 10% USA Triathlon discount on the bicycle coverage premium. Adding a third bike steps the multi-bike portion up to 15%.
Does my USA Triathlon membership automatically include race coverage on my policy?
No. Race coverage is a separate selection elected during the quoting process by choosing "competitive usage." It can be added or removed at any point during the policy term (for example, opted in for the racing season and removed during the off-season), so the premium tracks actual exposure.
Is my bike covered when I travel internationally for a race?
Worldwide coverage is available as an optional extension that can be added to any Velosurance policy. With it in place, a triathlon bike that flies to an international event is covered in transit, at the venue, in the hotel, and during pre-race training rides. Worldwide coverage is not included by default.
Does the policy reimburse me if a covered loss prevents me from racing?
Yes. Every Velosurance Physical Damage policy includes competitive event fee reimbursement (up to $500 per event, up to $1,000 per policy year, no deductible) and rental reimbursement (up to $250 per occurrence, no deductible) at no extra premium. Both kick in automatically when a covered loss either prevents you from competing in a paid event or requires you to rent a substitute bike during an event, trip, or race more than 50 miles from your insured location.
