Supporting the mountain bike community
The International Mountain Bicycling Association is the largest off-road cycling advocacy organization in the world. IMBA members and their local chapters fund trail building, defend access to public lands, train trail crews, and support the network of stewards who keep singletrack rideable across the United States and beyond. Velosurance offers a 10% discount on the bicycle coverage premium for active IMBA members as a way of recognizing that contribution and aligning with the cycling community that mountain bikers have built around trail advocacy.
Like every Velosurance discount, the IMBA discount is more than a marketing gesture. It reflects an underwriting reality: IMBA members tend to be experienced, careful riders who maintain their bikes to off-road standards, who store them indoors, and who transport them on proper hitch racks or in enclosed vehicles. Those habits correlate with lower claim frequency, and the discount returns that benefit to the rider.
Mountain bike-specific exposures
Crashing is an integral part of mountain biking, and the injury rate is higher than in any other type of cycling. Transport adds risk every time a destination ride means a multi-hour drive on a hitch or roof rack. Theft applies whether the bike is in transit or at home in a garage, basement, shed, or the shared bike storage rooms common in apartment complexes. Velosurance covers all three perils, provided the bike is properly secured when unattended and stored according to the policy's requirements, and the IMBA discount lowers the cost of that coverage.
IMBA membership tiers and eligibility
IMBA offers individual memberships at accessible price points. Adult memberships start at $35 per year, and youth memberships for riders under eighteen are $20 per year. Members of local IMBA chapters are typically enrolled in IMBA's dual membership program automatically, which means a chapter member usually has an IMBA national membership as well. Either route qualifies for the Velosurance discount.
Velosurance accepts any active IMBA individual or family membership as proof of eligibility for the 10% discount. The membership must be current at the time of policy issue or renewal. If you renew your IMBA membership annually, the Velosurance discount carries forward at each insurance renewal without requiring any additional action.
For younger riders, a Velosurance policy must be written in the name of a policyholder who is at least eighteen years old. For riders age twelve and up, the parent or guardian takes out the policy in their own name and adds the young rider as a named rider on the same policy. The young rider's IMBA youth membership qualifies the parent's policy for the discount.
Stacking the IMBA discount with the multi-bike discount
Mountain bikers often own more than one bike. A modern trail bike for everyday rides, a hardtail for cross-country events or technical climbing trails, an enduro or downhill bike for bike park weekends, and possibly an e-MTB for longer days or recovery rides. A single Velosurance policy can cover the entire fleet, and the IMBA discount stacks with the multi-bike discount in that scenario.
Two bikes on a policy generate a 10% multi-bike discount. Three or more bikes step the discount up to 15%. The 10% IMBA discount applies in addition, on the same bicycle coverage premium. The combined effect is meaningful, and the math is shown clearly in the quote so the policyholder can see exactly how the discounts interact.
How to apply the IMBA discount
When you request a quote from Velosurance, you will be asked whether you hold an active IMBA membership. The discount is applied automatically before the premium is finalized.
If you decide to join IMBA after your Velosurance policy is already in force, you can notify Velosurance once the membership is active and have the discount applied prospectively. Renewal of the discount the following year depends on whether the IMBA membership is active at the time of renewal. Riders who set their IMBA membership to renew automatically tend to maintain continuous eligibility from one year to the next without any manual coordination.
Race coverage and policy extras
IMBA membership does not automatically add race coverage. Race coverage is a separate selection elected during the quoting process by choosing "competitive usage," and it can be added or removed at any point during the policy term. Riders who race enduro, downhill, or cross-country events typically opt in for the racing season and remove it during the off-season.
Two extras come standard with every Velosurance Physical Damage policy at no additional premium: rental reimbursement (up to $250 per occurrence, no deductible) toward a substitute bike when a covered loss strikes more than 50 miles from the insured location at an organized event, trip, or race, and competitive event fee reimbursement (up to $500 per event, $1,000 per policy year, no deductible) toward nonrefundable entry fees when a covered loss prevents you from competing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which IMBA memberships qualify for the discount?
Any active IMBA individual or family membership qualifies. Adult ($35/year) and youth under-18 ($20/year) memberships both work, as does enrollment through a local IMBA chapter's dual membership program.
Can a younger rider's bike be covered on a Velosurance policy?
A Velosurance policy must be written in the name of a policyholder who is at least eighteen years old. For riders age twelve and up, the parent or guardian takes out the policy in their own name and adds the young rider as a named rider on the same policy. The young rider's IMBA youth membership qualifies the parent's policy for the discount.
Does the IMBA discount stack with the multi-bike discount?
Yes. The two are separate categories and apply together. A two-bike policy held by an active IMBA member receives the 10% multi-bike discount and the 10% IMBA discount on the bicycle coverage premium. Adding a third bike steps the multi-bike portion up to 15%.
Does my IMBA membership automatically include race coverage on my policy?
No. Race coverage is a separate selection elected during the quoting process by choosing "competitive usage." It can be added or removed at any point during the policy term (for example, opted in for the racing season and removed during the off-season), so the premium tracks actual exposure.
Does the policy reimburse me if a covered loss prevents me from racing or requires a rental?
Yes. Every Velosurance Physical Damage policy includes competitive event fee reimbursement (up to $500 per event, up to $1,000 per policy year, no deductible) and rental reimbursement (up to $250 per occurrence, no deductible) at no extra premium. Both kick in automatically when a covered loss either prevents you from competing in a paid event or requires you to rent a substitute bike during an event, trip, or race more than 50 miles from your insured location.
