Washington rewrote its e-bike definition in ESSB 6110, effective June 11, 2026. Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 e-bikes with pedals and 750 watts or less stay bicycles: no license, registration, or insurance mandate. Anything that tops 20 mph on throttle alone, or was sold to be easily unlocked, is now a motorcycle or moped, with the license, plate, insurance, and DOT helmet that come with it.

Every e-bike in New York City is capped at 15 mph, a red light on a bike is a traffic ticket again as of March 27, 2026, and no-fault pays up to $50,000 of your medical bills when a car, truck or bus hits you. It never pays for the bike, and it does not exist when no motor vehicle is involved. The rules, the crash numbers, and who pays after a crash in the five boroughs.

Connecticut rewrote its e-bike rules in Public Act 25-159 and Public Act 25-65, effective October 1, 2025. Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 e-bikes stay bicycles: no license, no registration, no insurance mandate. But a helmet is required at every age, and that rule now carries a ticket. Machines with a seat at least 26 inches high and up to 3,700 watts are motor-driven cycles needing only a driver's license. Above that line, it is a motorcycle with all the paperwork.

Illinois signed Public Act 104-0854, effective January 1, 2027. Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 e-bikes stay bicycles: no license, no registration, no insurance mandate. Anything over 750 watts or assisting past 28 mph becomes a motor driven cycle requiring a driver's license, title, registration, a VIN, and liability insurance. New minimum ages arrive, e-scooters come off sidewalks, and every local e-bike ordinance is preempted.

New Jersey now registers e-bikes the way it registers mopeds. Starting June 26, 2026, riders schedule an appointment at a Motor Vehicle Commission center, show proof of ownership, and walk out with plate stickers on the front fork. Here is exactly how to register your e-bike, when you need a license, and which bikes must carry insurance before the requirements take effect July 20, 2026.

New Jersey now requires most e-bike riders to register their bike, hold a driver's license, and carry liability insurance. Anything with a throttle or capable of assisting past 20 mph falls under the new rules. Riders under 15 are banned outright. The deadline to register is July 19, 2026, but the insurance requirement is live today. Your homeowners and auto policies won't cover it. You need a dedicated e-bike policy.

While coverage isn't mandatory, riders are excluded from PIP no-fault benefits. Data reviews in Oct 2026 will decide if even stricter rules are coming for 2027.

Most people don’t consider the risks involved in seemingly safe exercises and physical activities. However, unless your hobbies include extreme sports such as base jumping or motorcycle racing, every time you get on a bike, you’re taking on a disproportionately larger amount of risk than you would otherwise on that particular day.

If you’re an experienced cyclist, then you’ve probably owned multiple bikes, each progressively better and more expensive than the last. Whether you’re a commuter, a roadie, a mountain biker or a leisurely rider, you also know the importance of purchasing a bike that has a reputation of being resilient, reliable, and safe.

We get asked a lot of questions. Since the only stupid question is the one you did not ask, here is a list of the most common ones. 1. Is my bike covered if it is on the car bike rack and I am rear ended? A: Yes, the bike is covered subject to the policy deductible.

Your car is transportation, your home is shelter from the elements, but what is your bike? When you were a kid your bike was a toy, but today it has become part of your lifestyle. The value of some bikes now eclipse the price of a car and far from being a toy.

We hope it never happens but often a cyclist is badly injured by a driver who has no insurance or a motorist who has insufficient insurance (the minimum liability insurance required by state law is sometimes as low as $10,000), or a motorist that cannot be identified, such as a hit-and-run driver.

An often asked question is why does bicycle insurance cost as much as my motorcycle/auto insurance? This is a great question that needs discussion. Let’s consider some other anomalies in pricing and then we can get back to insurance.
